Program Description: This is an AmeriCorps VISTA position offered through the City & County of Honolulu AmeriCorps VISTA Program with support from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The mission of this program is to 1) address poverty, 2) build capacity, 3) empower communities, and 4) increase economic, social, and environmental resiliency across O‘ahu. In partnership with the Office of Climate Change, Sustainability and Resiliency, this full-time VISTA position will work in disaster preparedness within the Department of Emergency Management. The department is responsible for implementing public awareness, preparedness, and education programs critical to community-level resiliency regarding disasters and major emergencies.
This year-long position begins February 19, 2019 and is based in Honolulu, Hawai‘i.
Responsibilities and Duties: The Disaster Preparedness Community Training & Exercise Specialist VISTA will support outreach, education, and training initiatives for community disaster preparedness and resilience. The VISTA will also support development and conduct community level disaster preparedness exercises and drills, support the Oʻahu Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Advisory Council, and develop strategies for long-term sustainment. The VISTA will also assist with the promotion and outreach component of the CERT program, which aims to educate people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their neighborhood and train them in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Additionally, the VISTA will participate and assist in the planning and ongoing development of strategies and programs to better serve vulnerable communities, including people with disabilities and people with limited English proficiency.
Interest and demonstrated experience with community outreach, stakeholder engagement, and/or working with government/non-profit groups
Interest in a collaborative and integrated approach to building community resilience, disaster preparedness, and/or emergency management
Relevant education, work, and/or volunteer experience
Strong attention to detail, organization, planning skills, and personal accountability
Familiarity with Hawai‘i’s geography and communities, as well as a respect for Hawaiian language, culture, and traditions
Flexible in supporting other duties as assigned
In order to be considered for the for the City & County of Honolulu AmeriCorps VISTA Program, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
Available full-time (40 hours/week)
18 years or older
U.S. Citizen or a Lawful Permanent Resident
Not listed on the National Sex Offenders Public Registry
Compensation and Benefits:
Living allowance (approx. $24,119 annually)
Education award or end of service stipend (approx. $6,095)
